PROJECT PROFILE
KBL provided spill response, environmental monitoring and sampling following a release of diesel at a highway maintenance camp near Fort Mcpherson, NT. Onsite work including surface water monitoring, product recovery, protection of downstream receptors, remediation, investigation, monitoring of remaining impacts and risk assessment services. We partnered with local contractors and equipment operators onsite while managing access and logistical considerations for this remote location along the Dempster Highway.
SCOPE OF WORK
In June 2016, we were contacted by to provide soil disposal and spill delineation services in response to a diesel spill that occurred at a site adjacent to a stream frequently used for drinking water. Upon arriving onsite, we managed response activities including the use and deployment of spill response materials, sampling of surface water, obtaining biological samples, rough delineation of product and impacted soil, and the removal of soil impacts by excavation.
This project required specialized techniques to protect the stream from contaminant and sediment disturbed during excavation activities. During the excavation and delineation process, an Aqua-Guard™? dam was deployed across the length of the stream immediately adjacent to the disturbance. Following the restoration of the site, erosion control barriers were installed to prevent silt from entering the stream.
Following remediation, KBL managed delineation of remaining inaccessible impacted soil and groundwater impacts by drilling boreholes and installing groundwater wells. Groundwater and surface water monitoring and sampling were performed periodically in 2017. We were responsible for regulator interactions including routine site inspections and updates, and out-of-territory waste, relocation permitting. As well, updates were provided to local communities regarding the status of the site. In addition, we managed the scope, schedule and costs providing routine updates to DOT senior management as well as milestone reporting at the end of 2016.
PROJECT CHALLENGES
Several conditions made work at this location uniquely challenging including the wide variability in stream flow rates, braided ephemeral stream channels, relatively remote location, and a high-level of public scrutiny. We met these challenges with an adaptive goal-focused approach, exhaustive planning and clear regular communication with the stakeholders involved.
